It was a stunning morning in Bondi Beach today, the type that after a few days of grey weather puts a smile on my face and I can see it on many of those I walked past on my way to work this morning. So I cheerily went in to visit Norman Andrews House for a meeting with our great team.
But the mood war far more sombre there. A young man I hadn't seen before was anxiously waiting on the couch for assistance from Chrissy, our Coordinator, who was on the phone to a Doctor (while also on hold to a rehab service). He had been in rehab for nine months but when he came out his family weren't willing to have anything to do with him and so he spent a week living on the streets and re-used. It breaks my heart to think of the tragedy this family and young man have gone through and the insidious claws of drugs. He knew he had to get off the streets, saw our sign in front of the Chapel door, walked up the road to our service and asked for help.
Another young man walked in and nervously paced. When asked if he would mind waiting, he couldn't hold on any longer and spewed forth, "My family don't want to have anything to do with me and I can't bother them anymore. I'm ADHD, I've got nowhere to stay. I don't know what to do, I need help!"
In the last week we have seen an increase in the number of young people who have been asking for our help because of drug addiction - there's a lot of heroin on the streets right now.
Clearly these young men needed the team more than I did. Days like today make us all the more determined to do what we do, but we need your help. Email me if you can.
